A few steps, then settle in.

Start on the same private network. Keep the host running in your signed-in desktop session.

Set up Ubuntu
  1. Extract the Ubuntu package and open a terminal in that folder.
  2. Run ./deploy/install-ubuntu.sh as your normal desktop user. It installs dependencies and requests sudo for input-device permissions. Follow any sign-out instructions.
  3. Copy ~/.config/redremote/tls/ca.crt to your phone and install it as a CA certificate in Android settings. Keep the private .key files on your computer.
  4. Open Red Remote, choose Find computer on Wi-Fi, and connect. GNOME may request screen-sharing permission when you enable Stream.

The host installer lists your HTTPS address. Consult the included README for desktop dependencies and network setup.

Set up Windows Preview
  1. Install Python 3.12 or newer from python.org, including the Python launcher.
  2. Extract the Windows package. Open PowerShell in the extracted folder and run powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\windows\Install.ps1.
  3. The installer prints your address and password. Copy %LOCALAPPDATA%\RedRemote\redremote-ca.crt to your phone and install it as a CA certificate in Android settings.
  4. Open the Red Remote Host desktop shortcut. Allow its private-network firewall access. For discovery, run the included Firewall.ps1 as administrator.
  5. Open the Android app, find the computer, and enter the host password. You can also enter the HTTPS address manually.

This first Windows release has protocol and input-sequence tests; it still needs validation on a real Windows desktop. It controls the signed-in, unlocked session. Login screens, UAC prompts, and elevated apps are outside the standard host’s control. Server Core is not supported.

Use FlowHook away from home

Red Remote includes an optional FlowHook connection. It requires a configured host relay and pairing; it is not automatically included with a fresh Windows or Ubuntu host install. Local control works independently.
